For an in depth investigation of the mechanism and dynamics of the dissociative adsorption of molecular hydrogen on silicon surfaces, complementary experimental methods have been used. In particular, the influence of the substrate of the covalently bonded silicon on the reaction dynamics could be clarified on the microscopic scale by site selective adsorption measurements at statically distorted configurations. A more general scheme for the interplay between lattice distortions, electronic structure and reactivity is given.
