PURPOSE: A combination of nuclear medicine, ultrasound, excretory urogramm and voiding cystourethrography is used to investigate urologic disorders in children. A major problem is the lack of an accepted gold standard to assess urinary tract disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: These imaging studies were performed in 102 children. The information from the various imaging modalities was compared. RESULTS: Renal ultrasonography should be performed in all children first. Urinary tract obstruction typically showing hydronephrosis and/ or dilated urinary tract. Renal scintigraphy is used to assess renal anatomy and function. In all cases of ureteral dilatation, a voiding cystourethrogramm should be obtained to rule out vesicoureteral reflux as a possible cause of the dilatation. In all cases of clinical pyelonephtitis a voiding cystourethrogramm should be obtained. Renal scintigraphy is used to assess renal function. The excretory urogram is useful in selectet cases like renal duplication.
