The high number of studies concerning thromboembolic complications after lumbar disc surgery leads more to confusion than general recommendations in prophylaxis with heparine. This assay is evaluating primary and secondary risk factors of patients who suffered from thromboembolic complications after lumbar disc surgery. Retrospective evaluations of age, BMI, laboratory tests, medications, risk-factors, existing diseases and duration of narcosis and surgery mainly showed significant differences in narcotic duration, BMI, presurgery pain and existing diseases (varicosis). A reduction of the rate of thromboembolic complications could be possible by i.e. classifying risk-patients into risk-scores. The general adaptation of heparine in patients with high-risk-profiles going under lumbar disc surgery seems not to be necessary but the results of this assay lead to a more comprehensive observation and information for patients before surgery.
