This multicenter-study examined the effects of the birthtrainer Epi-No (Tecsana) on variables of birth and incidence of incontinence symptoms. Ninety primiparous women were included in this prospective and randomized study. We found a significant reduction in first degree perineal tears and a significant reduction in the average duration of the second stage of labour of instrumentally assisted deliveries in the exposed group. There were no differences concerning mode of delivery, lenght of stages of delivery, rates of episiotomy, incidence of second or higher degrees of perineal tears, analgetic measures like petidhin or PDA, condition of the newborn and incidence of incontinence symptoms between exposed and not-exposed group.
