Vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Benjamins pädiatrisches Werk als Teil der Kinderheilkunde seiner Zeit und gibt darüber hinaus Einblicke in ein typisch ‚deutsch-jüdisches’ Schicksal in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Ermittlung und Bearbeitung von Benjamins Publikationen ermöglichen dabei einen umfassenden Überblick über seinen beruflichen Werdegang, u.a. als Wissenschaftler und Kinderarzt an der Universitäts-Kinderklinik München und als Heilpädagoge in dem von ihm gegründeten Kindersanatorium in Zell-Ebenhausen. Berichte von Nachkommen und Zeitzeugen sowie spärliche zeitgenössische Quellen zeigen den privaten Hintergrund dieser beruflichen Laufbahn und belegen die zunehmenden Probleme eines jüdischen Arztes in der NS-Zeit. Erstmals wird im Anhang dieser Arbeit eine umfassende Personalbibliographie von Erich Benjamin erstellt.     «

This thesis examines the paediatric work of Benjamin as a part of Paediatrics in the early 20th century, furthermore it allows an insight into a typical “Jewish-German” fate in the first half of the 20th century. As a result the investigation of Benjamins publications allowed to get an extensive overall view about his professional developement, among other things as scientist and paediatrician at the Paediatric Clinic at the University of Munich and as therapeutic pedagogue at the childrens sanatorium in Zell-Ebenhausen, which he established himself. The recollections of descendants and contemporaries as well as rare contemporary sources show the private background of this professional career and supply evidence for the increasing problems a Jewish doctor had to face in Nazi Germany. For the first time in the appendix of this thesis there is published a comprehensive bibliography of Benjamins publications.     «
