In a not randomised, prospective clinical study, the cosmetic results, complications and contentedness were evaluated in 161 women undergoing breast conserving operations. The patients were operated on between 1994 and 1995 in the Gynaecological clinic of TU Munich, and were examined preoperatively and at intervals until 12,5 months postoperative. Included were women with benign (43%) and malignant (57%) tumours. They were treated, if need be, with radiotherapy (as a rule 56 Gy, homogenous) and, if need be, with adjuvant systemic therapy. A score (with 4 categories), which included the state of the skin, breast contour, nipple areolar complex and the symmetry, was used for interpretation of the cosmetic results. It was found that, in particular, a central tumour location, a large tumour in relation to breast size and radiotherapy were negative factors for the outcome and that the general contentedness of the patients was very high.
