In a cross-sectional study including 375 women aged 18-66 years we compared the bone-density of lumbar spine and femoral neck measured by double-energy-x-ray-absorptiometry and the results of peripheral quantitative computed tomography of tibia and radius. There was signifikant, but only moderate correlation between the bone-density of central an peripheral skeletal regions with the highest coefficient r=7 comparing the central bone-density-measurements with the bone density of tibial 4%-level. In the diagnosis of osteoporosis the bone density measured at peripheral skeletal region cannot predict the bone density of a central region.
