Acute arsenic poisoning is until today difficult to treat and ends lethally qite often. Unspecific measures as well as antidotes and extracorpreal elimination techniques are used therapeutically. The effect of the two known antidotes, Dimercaprol and DMPS, is compared in 6 cases of potentially lethal arsenic poisoning. The above mentioned chelating agents are used in the treatment of 3 cases respectively. Despite the low number of cases, the results are unequivocal. Patients treated with DMPS had a much more positive effect on the course of intoxication and the final clinical result than those treated with Dimercaprol. Furthermore can be stated, that due to the much more effecitve renal elimination of arsenic, extracorporeal elimination by hemodiafiltration becomes necessary only in case of anuric renal failure.
