The quality of life of the patient is definitely a priority in planning surgical procedures and should always be considered when it comes to surgical decision making in the case of vascular disease. Successful treatment is no longer based solely on study data, surgical results or 5-yearsurvival rates of the patient, instead it takes into account the quality of the patient`s life after surgery. In our study, a questionnaire was given to 55 patients with peripheral vascular disease (PVD), 50 patients with ACI-Stenosis and 100 patients with varicosis. An inquiry into their current state of health took place preoperatively and 3 months postoperatively, using the SF-36 questionnaire. The aim was to assess quality of life in relation to the total impact of surgery on the patient, taking into consideration aspects such as walking quality, independent or dependent living status, pain and emotional well being. A total of 181 patients completed both questionnaires (93%).Three months postoperatively the groups enjoyed optimal results with an increase in physical ability and emotional stability. Almost all patients benefited from vascular intervention with regard to their quality of life and to the treatment of disease-related symptoms. Therefore, the outcome of this study impressively justifies the use of vascular surgery to improve the quality of life of most patients. However, the physician must still strive for more accurate understanding of the natural outcome of the untreated disease and to convey realistic expections to the patient.
