New downstream processes for the extraction of astaxanthin from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis are presented. An alternative to mechanical cell wall disruption, the germination of the cyst cells is examined. New processes for the direct extraction of astaxanthin from germinated zoospores and mechanically disrupted cyst cells into a solvent, using liquid-liquid chromatography (LLC) and membrane-assisted extraction are presented. In a techno-economic study, the profitability of extraction using LLC and the industrial process are compared.
