The nucleation and crystallization of different cement hydrate phases (C-S-H, ettringite, calcium aluminate hydrate) in the absence and presence of different polyelectrolytes, e.g. PCEs, was investigated. C-S-H exhibited at first a globular morphology followed by a step-wise conversion to nanofoils. PCEs were found to stabilize these metastable globules and retard the conversion to foils. The crystal growth of ettringite is also influenced significantly by the presence of polymers. In the presence of PCEs, generally longer, but slimmer crystals are formed.
