With the ongoing success of 3D cinema, 2D to 3D conversion becomes a vivid field of research. The approaches range from high quality but high cost semi-manual conversion to real time systems, which suffer from poor quality. The challenge is to find an optimum balance between quality and computational efficiciency. In this thesis I introduce three solutions for subtasks of 2D to 3D conversion, a Swarm Intelligence based image analysis tool, an efficient contour matching algorithm, and a lightweight adaptive depth map generator.
