Since the description of the Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) based on loop detector data (LDD) and floating car data (FCD) for the city of Yokohama, several analytical approximation methods to derive the MFD for arterial roads and urban networks have been proposed. This paper reviews the most recent deterministic methods for the estimation of an arterial MFD and compares them to an empirical MFD based on a rich data set for the city of Munich, Germany. This data set includes LDD, FCD and signal data (SD).
