Early exposure to maternal stimuli (inflammation and obesity) is a potential risk factor for the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. This murine study shows, that epithelial programming of the fetal gut, which is hardly influenced by both maternal stimuli is not a determining factor for the development of postnatal inflammation. However, early life exposure to maternal obesity accelerated the onset of genetically-driven ileitis, whereas early life exposure to maternal inflammation attenuated the severity of experimentally-induced colitis. This might be caused by maternally-triggered changes in offspring’s immunity and energy metabolism.
