The aim of this study was to investigate if selenium as radical scavenger has protective effects after irradiation of breast cancer cells. Three cell lines were used. MCF7, T47D, MDA-MB231. The rate of apoptosis, frequency of DNA double- strand breaks and clonogenic cell survival were measured in-vitro using three different selenium concentrations, with and without radiation. In the first two tests the selenium concentration showed no significant influences. In the clonogenic cell survival test after supplementation with selen leaded to higher cell survival after irradiation which demonstrated a protective effect.
