Low mRNA expression of the tumor suppressor HTRA1 in primary tumors was shown to be associated with unfavorable clinical outcome by measurement of mRNA expression in 131 breast cancer samples, as well as by analysis of 2809 breast cancer cases from the GEO database. DNA methylation in the promoter region of the gene HTRA1 was analyzed in ten tumor samples and two breast cancer cell lines for a possible role in downregulation of HTRA1 expression. In fact, part of the samples with low HTRA1 mRNA expression showed DNA methylation.
