Skin contamination is still a risk factor for surgical site infections despite antiseptical skin washing preoperatively. Prospectively collected data of patients with planned laparotomy at the Department of Surgery, TUM, were used to determine the efficacy of preoperative antiseptical skin washing procedure of the umbilicus. Additionally the effect of remaining microbial contamination to surgical site infections was estimated. 25% of the preoperative disinfections were incomplete and one out of seven surgical site infections was caused by umbilicus contamination.
