The synthesis and reactivity of a new class of iridium pincer complexes was investigated, in particular with respect to small molecule activation (dioxygen, hydrocarbons). The electronic, steric, and cooperative features of the utilized PNP ligand enabled the isolation of unusual compounds, such as square-planar iridium(II/III) complexes. Mechanistic details of C-H functionalization and dioxygen reduction were examined by in depth kinetic studies and provide valuable information for the design of catalysts for such transformations.
