This allergy study examines the presence of a clinically relevant food allergy in patients with atopic eczema. In the majority of patients, the extrinsic type of atopic eczema with the detection of specific IgE antibody was present. Children showed predominantly sensitization to food allergens, adults showed more frequently sensitization against aeroallergens. Our in vivo testing revealed a higher sensitivity of the prick test with native allergens compared to commercial food test extracts. The clinical manifestations after positive provocation tests differed significantly from the patient's history, but not between provocation with cow's milk versus hen´s egg. The provocation test remains indispensable for the detection of food allergy in atopic eczema.
