For the planned high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC), the rate capability of the muon detectors of the LHC experiments will be exceeded . The spatial resolution and muon efficiency of new drift tube detectors for the Muon Spectrometer of the ATLAS detector have been studied under high photon and proton irradiation rates and have been understood using simulations. The new detectors showed an about an order of magnitude better rate capability than the current muon detectors of the ATLAS detector. Further improvements can be achieved with new read-out electronics optimised for high counting rates.
