Within this study, 57 severely injured patients (polytrauma) were surveyed. With the aid of an automated immunoassay, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-10 levels were measured during the direct posttraumatic phase for up to 72 hours and correlated with clinical parameters employing statistical methods. The results reveal a time dependent dynamic of the interleukin concentrations in the early posttraumatic phase. Furthermore, a correlation between the measured interleukin concentrations and the amount of transfused red blood cell concentrates was observed.
