The influence of experimental parameters on structure formation in surface-supported nanostructures is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. Hereto, functionalized organic molecules are deposited onto metals or graphite under ultrahigh vacuum or ambient conditions to form networks with varying strength of intermolecular interaction. Studied influencing variables comprise monomer coverage on the surface, lattice and material of a substrate, coadsorption of solvent molecules, deposition rate of monomers, and substrate temperature.
