Biological systems often have characteristics that are desirable for robotic systems as well. Biomimetics describes the transfer of concepts proven in nature to technical systems. In this work, novel biomimetic approaches for the design of robotic systems are introduced. One contribution concerns the communication between humans and robots, with the focus on social aspects. Innovative design approaches and methods for the generation of implicit communication signals and their application strategies are investigated. Another contribution involves the biomimetic extension of robotic perception. Inspired by the capability of fish to perceive objects solely by means of flow fields, an artificial lateral line system is developed. On this basis, novel methods for reconstructing the environment from the flow field and localization of the robot are presented. The results are validated in simulation and extensive experiments.
