Infection with the parasitic helminth S. mansoni passes from initial inflammatory immune responses to ensuing immunosuppression, which is known to dampen allergic reactions. In this study, the protective role of regulatory T cells was shown by specific depletion of these cells in a murine model of allergic airway inflammation. In addition, this study revealed that predominant exposure to different immune phases during maternal helminth infection could affect the offspring’s susceptibility to allergies, ranging from protection to enhancement of allergic disease.
