Our study evaluated both preventive and abortive acupuncture and antihistamine itch therapy (cetirizine) on allergen-induced itch and skin reactions in 20 adult patients with AD using a blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover-trial. Both verum-acupuncture and cetirizine significantly reduced itch, compared to both placebo and no-intervention-control. Timing of acupuncture application was important, as abortive verum-acupuncture had the most significant effect on itch. Itch reduction following cetirizine coincided with reduced attention.
