We reevaluated 68 patients after conservative treatment of a fracture of the proximal humerus using the Constant score and the questionnaire for assessing the quality of life due to Henrich and Herschbach. On average the patients attained 68,9 points in the Constant score which is an unsatisfactory result. There was no significant difference between patients treated with the Desault bandage and Gilchrist bandage. Fractures with the ICD-Code S42.24 led to significantlybetter results than fractures of the type S42.20. The quality of life of our patients was comparable to that of the German population.
Fractures with little or no displacement should be treated conservatively. There is no clear choice for the best treatment of displaced fractures of the proximal humerus. In addition, we give an overview over the literature about conservative and surgical treatments of proximal humerus fractures.
