Cooperative systems exploit potential beyond conventional intelligent transportation systems. Development
and research concerning such systems in urban areas mainly focus on signalized intersections. Cooperative
systems can act to influence the signalization, the drivers, or a combination of both signalization and drivers.
In this article, selected national and European research efforts are presented that aim at incurring both a raise
of traffic efficiency and traffic safety. Subsequently, areas for future research are introduced, including
requirements for the enhancement of existing or the development of new signal control systems, the change in
driving behaviour due to the usage of cooperative systems and the consideration of further diversifying types
of vehicles and propulsion systems.
