Porphyrine spielen eine Schlüsselrolle in vielen biologischen Prozessen und stellen einen vielversprechenden Baustein für technische Anwendungen dar. Um diese vielfältig funktionalen Moleküle gezielt zu nutzen, ist es häufig vorteilhaft sie auf eine Oberfläche aufzubringen. In dieser Dissertation werden Tetraphenyl-Porphyrine (TPP), entweder mit einem Metallion oder zwei Wasserstoffen im Zentrum, auf Silber und Kupfer auf molekularer Ebene ausführlich untersucht. Rastertunnelmikroskopie in Kombination mit komplementären Methoden klärt die Anordnung und die Konformation der Moleküle. Außerdem werden das außergewöhnliche Bindungsverhalten zweiatomiger Gase sowie die Synthese von Cer-Porphyrin-Sandwichkomplexen gezeigt. 2H-TPP kann durch Protonentransfer zwischen zwei Leitfähigkeitniveaus schalten und durch gezielte Deprotonation zu einem Vier-Niveau-System erweitert werden. Schließlich werden Molekülinseln genutzt um gekoppelte Quantentöpfe herzustellen.
