In a case-control study, 29 patients with polymorphic light eruption (PLE) and 144 healthy controls were genotyped for polymorphism of the isoenzymes glutathione S-transferase M1 (GSTM1), glutathione S-transferase T1 (GSTT1) and for the incidence of the wild type (Ile/Ile i.e. AA) and two single nucleotide polymorphisms (Ile/Val i.e. AG and Val/Val i.e. GG) of glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1). We found no significant differences between patients and controls. This data suggests that this familiy of isoenzymes do not play a protective or predisposing role in the pathogenesis of polymorphic light eruption.
