Climate change is intrinsically linked with increasing carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere of the earth. Therefore the application of regenerative energy and material sources is of high importance. Hydrogen is viewed as an energy carrier with a high future potential. In this work, protic ionic liquids are used as catalysts in hydrogen activation and as hydrogen storage materials. The used metal-containing ionic liquids were tested for their catalytic activity in hydroformylation and hydrogenation reactions, where the rate determining steps are the splitting of hydrogen. Nitrogen-boron-containing ionic liquids were examined as hydrogen storage materials with a high hydrogen storage capacity. In the second part of the work, carbon dioxide is used as a regenerative raw material for the synthesis of cyclic and polymeric carbonates. Therefore, iron amine complexes were used as catalysts for CO2 activation and conversion.
