In a study on Ultra-High Performance Fibre Reinforced Shotcrete (UHPFRSC) for structural strengthening, specimens were cut out of spray-boxes and sliced to analyse fibre orientation in the sprayed layers with an opto-analytical approach, also known as “Method of Ellipses” (MoE). This method evaluates the cross-sectional shapes of steel fibres in concrete specimens, which vary based on their inclinations, providing insights into fibre alignment. The results indicate that the fibres are predominantly aligned perpendicular to the direction of spraying and parallel to the ground, confirming the expected influence of spraying direction on fibre orientation. The investigations indicate that the “Method of Ellipses” is generally a suitable approach for the analysis of fibre orientation in concrete. In the structural context, the findings endorse the use of UHPFRSC for structural strengthening and fibre reinforced shotcrete overall.
