The introduction of new technologies into specific fields always requires that they are easy to use and well designed to suit the needs of the target group. This requirement is especially important in the case of a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) and in the rescue service in general. In the scope of the SpeedUp project the Emergency Medical Chief (EMC), i.e. the target group, is supposed to use a map application on a ruggedized tablet PC. Therefore, it is necessary to design the User Interface (UI) of the map application close to the requirements of the target group and optimize it iteratively. The thorough design and implementation of new user-interfaces would potentially reduce problems related to the usability of the application. In the first step we developed different concepts to move and zoom the map while using just the thumbs. Finally, in order to evaluate these concepts, we conducted a user study to be able to compare and rate them. These alternatives are especially designed for the requirements of an MCI.     «
