Building Information Modeling makes a significant contribution to digitalisation in the construction industry. A digital model forms the core of the planning. Often, however, the built state deviates from the planning and must be updated to ensure that the model can be used in the operating phase of the building. A model can also be created retrospectively for existing buildings. This is known as as-built documen-tation. This work is intended to provide a general overview of the status of as-built docu-mentation in research and practice. For this purpose, the technological fundamen-tals of point cloud acquisition and processing are presented and the various algo-rithms for segmentation are explained. For use in practice, various programs are presented that enable modelling and comparison with one another. Then the pro-cess is explained in practice, from the definition of the required information to the creation of the model and the legal framework. The conclusion is a presentation of different use cases.
