Building Information Modeling (BIM) offers potential improvements for all project participants during the planning, execution and operation of a building. In today’s practical operations, BIM methods are used particularly in the planning stage of a project. The deployment of such during the execution phase is still lagging behind. Some innovative companies are already using BIM methods for their costing or for work preparation. However, these functionalities are applied only for in-house processes, without including other project members. Therefore, the application area of BIM is dominated by local usage in the execution phase. By this, the majority of the potential of BIM remains untapped. The full implementation of BIM’s potential is only possible by the shared use of model information throughout the lifecycle of a building. In this account in this master thesis a systematic and company-wide handling with the BIM methodology in work phase 8 (HOAI) will be provided. Further will be demonstrated how it can be implemented by using individual BIM use cases. In this context, a specific BIM use case describes a certain data exchange scenario for which data and information from a BIM model are defined, created, changed or passed on. Therefore, a specific BIM use case pursues a certain project goal. Initially, common business processes of the execution phase are identified in this master thesis and are then contrasted with the potentials of the BIM methodology. The valuation of these defined BIM use cases occurs with the help of a survey among the German construction industry. The main goal of this survey is to determine use cases, considered to have the highest potential and the biggest need for action regarding a BIM-based execution by the participants. Based on this analysis three business processes were worked out to form a BIM based change management, quality management and BIM based consider application. The elaboration occurred per use case, based on a practically oriented scenario. Within the scenario, each use case is defined by a detailed description of the executed work stages, a process map as well as a precise representation of possible BIM uses within a single work stage and possible software applications for their realization. The thesis concludes with a practical implementation of a planning change according to section 1 (3) VOB/B during the execution phase within a model-based and company-wide workflow. Furthermore, it is investigated to what extend the specific scenario can be put into practice within the three different software solutions BIMcollab by Kubus, BIM360 by Autodesk and BIM Collaboration by think project!.
