The acoustical behavior of axle drives in electric vehicles significantly influences driving comfort due to the missing masking effect of a combustion engine and increasing operating speeds. On the basis of comprehensive structure- and airborne noise measurements gears with different tooth geometry are analyzed for two transmissions of an electric vehicle and on a high-speed test rig with speeds up to 30 000 min-1. The results lead to a guideline for designing low vibration axle gears of electromechanical powertrains.
