Satisfaction of visitors on a public urban event is one important aspect that reflects the service quality of organizers as well as the efficiency of event management. Often a good visitor experience is likely to result in financial profits. Further, in regard to large-scale public gathering events, the human safety is highly considered in order to build up an effective response in case of any emergency. In this context, a pedestrian simulation is significant for designing and managing aspects of urban events. According to the literature review provided by this thesis, group behaviours exist among pedestrians, nevertheless, most studies of pedestrian behaviours focus merely on interactions among isolated individuals, surprisingly social interactions such as friends, couples and family members among pedestrians in crowd have been neglected when developing pedestrian models. As highlighted in literatures, social interactions have various impacts on pedestrian behaviours as well as the decision making process, and those impacts should be considered for reflecting the real-world event. As a feasible and effective approach, Agent-based method is able to capture the pedestrian movements on a festival event. In the proposed model, an Agent-based method is used and it is incorporated with System Dynamics in order to create autonomous agents, which have individual characteristics and are able to influence the other agents at a group level. Based on a previous research work including empirical data, an Agent-based model is constructed by using Anylogic modelling software. As simulation results, the performance of pedestrians (virtual humans) is evaluated in a public event environment. The main contributions of this thesis are concluded in the following aspects: (1) improve the understanding of group dynamics; (2) provide a realistic agent-based model by embedding the group behaviours; (3) illustrate the impact of group dynamics in public event; (4) discuss the potential application area with respect to agent-based modelling.
