Road infrastructure is an important element for a country's economy. To maintain the reliability and functionality of this critical infrastructure various technologies are used throughout their lifecycle. For the planning of roads and engineering structures, the digital planning technology BIM is gaining in importance and replacing the traditional 2D planning. After completion of a construction project, the as-built data is handed over to the user. In this lifecycle phase, the focus is on preserving the structure and maintaining the required safety measures. The technology of the digital twin is already being used in other technical areas to monitor and optimize these conditions. The digi-tal twin system is a combination of different technologies which are used for data ac-quisition, processing, analysis, visualization, and storage. In this paper, the different components of a digital twin are examined. Furthermore, the international application of digital twins in the maintenance management of road infrastructure is analysed. The core of these paper is the analysis of the existing maintenance management sys-tem for roads and bridges in the Free State of Bavaria. Possible optimization possibili-ties based on the literature for the improvement of the system are named in order to improve the existing simple digital twin in its functions.
