Intraoperative guidance systems have been proposed for various medical applications and with various technologies. One technology is using augmented reality visualization, a technique that superimposes acquired patient data e.g. pre-operative or intra-operative imaging data in-situ. This means the imaging data is projected spatially registered onto the surgeon's real view of the region of interest. In-situ visualization has advantages in applications where depth does not matter, but the lateral positioning. In this work we describe the tests of a head mounted augmented reality system on phantoms to validate the procedure and finally on a cadaver experiment. Three trauma surgeons performed the interlocking of intramedullary nails (im-nail locking) on the cadaver, representing a standard operating procedure in minimally invasive trauma surgery that requires high precision in lateral dimensions.
