As far as the area of eLearning is concerned, course based learning management systems are enhanced with standard web 2.0 functionalities. However, active, interdisciplinary and informal learning is not yet fully supported in existing systems. This work contributes to restructuring web based learning management systems and additionally extends them with elements of personal knowledge management. User controlled processes in current learning management systems are modeled using activity diagrams to analyze and determine shortcomings and deficiencies. Based on the findings obtained and on current surveys on user behavior in social software, a novel platform for learning and knowledge management is developed. A first prototype of the platform developed, based on a portal server technology, was launched and evaluated at a few selected universities.
