Die Arbeit untersucht die Effekte einer Kaskadennutzung von Holz auf Umweltwirkungen und die Effizienz der Ressourcennutzung. Für die Potenzialanalyse wird ein auf Baustoffinventaren von Gebäuden basierender Ansatz entwickelt. Die Umwelteinwirkungen und die Effizienz der Kaskadennutzung werden mit vergleichenden Ökobilanzen und mittels eines regionalen Stoffstrommodells der Holznutzung, gekoppelt mit linearer Optimierungsfunktion, untersucht. Kaskadennutzung erwies sich als die aus Umweltsicht und unter Effizienzgesichtspunkten meist zu bevorzugende Nutzungsoption für anfallendes Altholz.     «

The thesis aims to assess whether material cascading can reduce environmental impacts and increase the efficiency of wood utilization. To analyze the available wood potential for cascading in regard to amounts and quality, a novel approach based on material inventories of buildings is applied. Environmental impacts and efficiency are examined with the life cycle assessment method and by combining a regional material flow model of wood use with optimization. Cascading was found to be the preferable utilization option for recovered wood in regard to environmental impacts and resource efficiency.     «
