The wear of the cutting tools is a frequent cause for maintenance stops while tunneling with Hydroshield TBMs in soft ground. In a data analysis of 18 reference projects the main influencing factors on the wear of the cutting tools were determined and quantified. The factors derive from the de-sign of the TBM, the TBM advance parameters and the geotechnical conditions. Based on these factors an empirical prognosis model for the wear of the cutting tools was developed. The model enables the estimation of the chainage of the maintenance stops and the required number of cutting tools to be changed.
