Investigations on the epidemiology and biology of Fusarium head blight (FHB) of barley were subject of the present work. While studies on the natural occurrence of Fusarium species in spring and winter barley revealed insights into the actual relevance of the disease, artificial inoculation experiments under field and greenhouse conditions were conducted to investigate specific damage potentials of different mycotoxin-producing Fusarium species in barley cultivars differently susceptible to FHB. Moreover, microscopic and gene expression studies provided new knowledge about the infection pathways of different Fusarium species and host-specific defense mechanisms, which are involved in barley resistance to FHB.
