Verschiedene Schwindreduzierer (Alkandiole, Glycolether, Amino-terminierte Polyglycole) wurden auf ihre Wirksamkeit in Zementmörtel getestet. Es zeigte sich, dass Glycolether (DPGTBE und TPGPE) die beste Wirkung aufweisen. Alle wirksamen SRAs senken die Oberflächenspannung der Porenlösung und bewirken eine schnellere und stärkere Austrocknung des Zementmörtels. Bei Glycolethern und einigen Alkandiolen kann dies durch Micellbildung in der Porenlösung erklärt werden. Diese Micellen fungieren als Template für Nano-Poren, wodurch vermehrt kleinere Poren entstehen. Im Rasterelektronenmikroskop ist zudem die verstärkte Bildung langer Ettringit-Nadeln in den Poren zu erkennen. Sie verhindern eine Kontraktion (Schwinden) dieser Poren. Adsorption von SRAs am Zement konnte nicht beobachtet werden. Chemisch verschiedene SRAs wirken offenbar über unterschiedlichen Mechanismen.
