This meta-analysis compared the antipsychotic drug olanzapine with other atypical neuroleptics in the treatment of schizophrenia. A total number of 50 randomised, at least single-blinded studies were included. The results indicated that, in terms of efficacy, olanzapine was comparable to amisulpride and clozapine. However, olanzapine is somewhat more efficacious than aripiprazole, quetiapine, risperidone, and ziprasidone. Olanzapine differed in several side-effects significantly from the other substances. The most consistant of which was the tendency of olanzapine to cause weight gain and associated metabolic problems.
