Phosphorus-containing polymers are plastics with a wide potential field of application. Polyvinylphosphonates and the respective free acid are the best known and investigated representatives. Until now it was not feasible to produce high and well defined molecular weights of these materials. In this work it has been possible, by application of rare-earth metal complexes, to initiate and prove a Group-Transfer-Polymerization of vinylphosphonates. This presents for the first time, besides a new approach towards high molecular weight materials, the possibility to produce block copolymers with acrylic systems. By coupling of lightscattering/GPC separation additional analytical evidence for these findings were provided.
