The empirical study focuses on the design requirements for internet-based interaction platforms, supporting the customer integration in mechanical engineering industries. Based on state of the art research, a theoretical framework results in a set of propositions, that can be verified by quantitative and qualitative research methods. A requirement profile is extracted from the empirically validated results. The profile is implemented and evaluated as a prototype, resulting in critical factors for the competitive advantages, the customer benefits, and the overall acceptance of such an implementation. The theoretical and empirical studies, the prototypical implementation, and its evaluation, reveal a growing need for new approaches for industrial interaction platforms, depending on the specific type of business. Especially, the system architecture oriented businesses are assumed to gain unexpected high benefit.
