Patients undergoing cardiac surgery require allogenic blood transfusion more often than patients undergoing other surgeries. Despite a considerable reduction of the risk of infections within the last years, there is still a large number of immunologic risks remaining. Moreover, a shortage of blood products is predicted for the near future.
This study examined the efficiency and safety of preoperative autologous blood donation (PABD) as a method to reduce allogenic blood transfusions. For that purpose data of 432 patients who underwent elective cardiac surgery at the German Heart Center Munich were collected in order to perform a matched-pair analysis.
The study found that PABD effectively reduces the exposition to allogenic blood and does not involve any serious complications requiring intervention. Consequently, PABD is a safe and efficient method to reduce the need for allogenic blood transfusions in cardiac surgery.
