The Internet of Things is becoming an increasingly important idea in intra logistics: Autonomous conveyor modules and transport units cooperatively control even complex systems without requiring a central host computer. The flexibility of automated solutions increases drastically, costs are going down.
This paper analyses communication in a distributed material flow system with respect to both technology and content. A combination of centralized and distributed methods for data storage and exchange allow for a robust, efficient and also traceable information exchange. Furthermore, tasks typical of intra logistics which are currently realized only in a centralized manner, e.g. sorting, are distributed onto independent modules and realized on the basis of various cooperation patterns. Logistics processes can be freely configured without the need for programming.
