This PhD thesis is aimed at the isolation of new secondary metabolites from higher fungi, the elucidation of their structures and the determination of their ecological relevance for the producer organism. Therefore, fruiting bodies of the genera Bulgaria, Entoloma, Megacollybia and Mycena were investigated and eight so far unknown compounds were isolated. Their structures were elucidated mainly by NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric methods. The absolute configuration of stereogenic centers was determined by chemical degradation reactions and comparison with authentic samples. The relative configuration was deduced from the coupling constants and NOE correlations. To evaluate the ecological relevance of the new natural products as potential constitutive chemical defence compounds, their bioactivity was tested in agar diffusion assays. In addition, the wound-activated defence mechanisms of two Mycena species were elucidated.
