The dissertation in hand discusses important parameters when designing sun protective measures. A large number of characteristic values and physical properties need to be taken into account. The most relevant are explained, discussed and put into correlation.
Controlling the solar heat gain coefficient of glass surfaces plays a key role in avoiding overheating in extensively glazed buildings. For numerous reasons there is a tendency to integrate sun protective measures into the building’s skin rather than attaching it to the outside of the building. The specific demands of integrated systems are shown and readily available systems are discussed with regard to their intrinsic advantages and disadvantages.
From the analysis of existing approaches a list of specifications was derived and a profile of desirable requirements was compiled. One of the key tasks was the capability to adapt to changing environmental conditions, without having to rely on user interaction or costly motorized building control systems. Another aspect was transparency and a clear view out even when the system is in sun protection mode.
Ultimately this led to the development of a new system which has been registered for copy right protection. The proposed system combines three well-known principles into one new sun shading device: silver reflective coatings, interstitial blinds, and daylight redirection capabilities. A change in system properties is initiated by the sun itself with bimetals acting as temperature driven switches for opening or closing highly reflective lamellae.
The system design has been documented in pictures, examined on a number of increasingly sophisticated mock-ups, evaluated from a perceptional point of view, and tested under laboratory conditions to assess the overall energetic performance. The new development offers a promising alternative to conventional approaches. Patent pending.
